THE DIGITAL SWITCHOVER - A WELSH PERSPECTIVE
If you live in the LONDON region and receive your signal from Alexander Palace Your TV will be going digital from April this year (2012). If you are 75 or over, you should have received a booklet from the BBC describing the options available to you prior to the digital switchover which occurs later this year.
The offer - to supply and install a choice of digital systems - represents exceptional value for money, while for the "Eastern England Welsh" community there is an added bonus, provided you select the correct option.
There are two basic systems on offer,
FREEVIEW which works off an aerial and FREESAT which requires a dish similar to a Sky dish. Both systems offer the same basic choice of BBC and Commercial channels but Freesat gives other options.
Freesat gives you easy access to all Welsh regional TV and Radio, BBC and Commercial. You would be able to watch BBC1 Wales, BBC2 Wales, ITV, Wales, S4C, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. (you can also access other UK regions this way) Other options on offer include Freesat recorders. These are much more versatile and convenient than the old VHS machines and though more expensive than the basic Freesat box, are still very good value because of the subsidy.
If you already subscribe to Sky, then you are in effect receiving Freesat, though paying for the privilege !!! If you cancel your subscription, you will retain your Sky box and enjoy Freesat for free.
